How do I group files with paperclips?

Clips collect related documents across folders — without moving a single file.

Some things belong together but live apart: the apartment lease, the landlord’s letters, the deposit receipt — filed under different folders, correctly. A paperclip (clip) groups them without moving anything.

Three kinds of clips

  • Manual clips — you curate them. Select files → right-click → Add to Clip, or drop files onto a clip in the sidebar.
  • Smart clips — built in and always current: Filed This Week, Needs Review.
  • Saved searches — any search saved as a clip; membership updates live, with a badge count in the sidebar.

Working with clips

  • The Clips view in the left panel lists them all with counts.
  • Click a clip to see its files in one list, regardless of where they live on disk.
  • Removing a file from a clip never touches the file itself — a clip is a view, not a folder.

Let the assistant do it

The AI Assistant can build clips for you:

“Find everything about the apartment lease and clip it together.”

It searches, shows you what it found, creates the clip, and links each file so one click jumps to it.
